Social Dilemma
Social Dilemma
The last two class periods we have been in person for we were watching a Netflix documentary called "The Social Dilemma". The bases of the documentary is that social media has a massive control over the vast majority of people. The co-creators of some of these major platforms are realizing these problems and have come out to talk about them. While also trying to in a sense brainstorm ways to avoid the issues that are growing at very quick rates.
I feel like it is a good thing that Netflix sponsored the documentary and gave it a platform. This stuff is an issue however I think its an issue because people are not adapting as quick as the technology is. Humanity will always progress its just a matter of fast the overall social construct can progress. An example of this is phones. The telegraph was created in 1854 it only took 132 year for humans to see the first smartphone which was released in 1992. It was way quicker for us to get from that first smart phone to what we have now which is a thousand times more advanced. The reason I bring up this analogy is people at the time probably never thought it would be possible to talk with people across the world even when they had a telegraph. That only took place in 1927. 39 years after the telegraph was first patented. So I bring this up to show that no matter what we do humanity and technology will always progress to make our lives "easier". I use quotations around that because while yes life becomes easier there are draw backs to technology advancing so quick. Like false information, bullying, and personal information not being so personal. Many people are starting to fear the concept of technology advancements because we can not really comprehend where could we possible go next. While trying to grasp that concept we have still yet to deal with the draw backs of what we currently have. Our mental health is way more important than ever because our mental can be effected so easily in this world of technology. It would help if we could hit a timeout button on technology. Sadly we do not have that so we have to adapt quicker than any other generation before us. Kids now see things that some generations did not see till they were in their 30's. Our society as a whole is way more advance so we need to come up with advance solutions and most importantly take care of the ones around us. As many get lost behind their screens.
Overall, I enjoyed the movie it brought up great points. It was great way to bring awareness to situations it is up to you and I to hold ourselves accountable. While also putting pressure on these big corporations that are using us as not only and audience but as the product.
Something I brought up in my own blog was also the fact that people are constantly accessible to each other online, and it'd be great if, for the sake of our mental health, we could flip an "off" switch. I think the speed at which technology has been advancing in the last several years is definitely, as you said, faster than we as people can adapt to it. It will be interesting to see what advancements are made in the future and what kind of effect that has on our mental health moving forward.
